Fitness Repost

This was a friend's Facebook status this morning, and I thought it was worthy of a repost. He owns a small gym in town and was my trainer after I had Mister Man. I think I'm going back there three mornings a week (at 5:30 a.m.) starting in the New Year. Not because I have a significant amount of weight to lose, but simply because I want to feel strong, fit into all of my old clothes, feel better about myself and make sure I don't develop a lifestyle of laziness. And I love the other girls that work out there in the morning. It is amazing how much harder I work when put alongside friends.

Obesity is a major issue around the world and that's due in large part to the kinds of foods we're eating. Let's take a moment to examine the impact a banana split would have on your exercise routine.

"You can't stay at the gym long enough to overcome a banana split," says Dr Allison. "To burn off the calories that you can eat in 10 minutes with a big bowl of ice-cream with nuts and fruit and syrup on it, you would have to exercise vigorously for two hours or more. If you don't control the dietary intake, almost any amount of exercise is insufficient to lose weight and maintain a healthy weight."

It's not just banana splits we're talking about here. You'd need to lift weights for three hours to burn off a cheeseburger, ride a bike for 90 minutes to see off a muffin and play tennis for two hours to burn a couple of slices of pepperoni pizza.

How's that for a pre-holiday shocker? Granted, I do not know who Dr. Allison is. But little reminders like this help me make good choices year-round. (Except for the box of cookies I've been working on since my neighborhood cookie swap a few days ago. That doesn't count, right?)
